Calathea Ornata, known as the Pinstripe Plant, is one of the most elegant plants in the Calathea family. Its broad, deep green leaves are painted with fine pink and white stripes that radiate outward from the midrib like brushstrokes — a pattern so precise it looks hand-drawn. The undersides are a rich, deep purple. Like all Calatheas it folds its leaves upward each evening and opens them again in the morning in the characteristic prayer plant movement.

Good for beginners? It requires more attention than beginner plants. Calathea Ornata prefers consistent humidity, filtered water, and indirect light. It is best suited to growers who enjoy attentive tropical plant care.

Safe for cats and dogs? Yes. Calathea is non-toxic to pets, making it safe for homes with cats and dogs.

Light needs: Bright indirect light preserves the pink striping most vividly. Avoid direct sun which will scorch and fade the delicate pattern. It tolerates medium light but growth and color intensity slow.

Care at a glance: Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Use filtered or distilled water to prevent brown leaf tips. High humidity is important — mist regularly, use a pebble tray, or place near a humidifier. Feed monthly in spring and summer.

Care Instructions

First, Calathea 'Ornata' prefers bright, indirect sunlight and a warm environment. If the plant is receiving too much direct sunlight, the leaves may start to yellow.
The soil should be kept moist but not wet. Water your Calathea when the soil feels dry about 1 inch below the surface. Overwatering is one of the most common causes of plant death, so be sure not to saturate the soil.
Calathea 'Ornata' requires high humidity levels to thrive, so if the air in your home is dry, consider humidifier
