Staghorn Fern is one of the most dramatic and architecturally striking plants in the fern world. Its broad, forked fronds grow in the shape of antlers — bold, sculptural, and unlike anything else you can hang on a wall or display on a shelf. It is an epiphyte, meaning it naturally grows attached to trees rather than in soil, which makes it a genuinely unique mounting plant that turns any wall into a living installation.

Good for beginners? It requires a slightly different approach than potted plants — Staghorn Ferns thrive when mounted on wood or hung in a basket with moss rather than grown in conventional soil. With the right mounting and watering routine it is very rewarding and long-lived.

Safe for cats and dogs? Yes. Staghorn Fern is non-toxic to pets.

Light needs: Low to medium indirect light is ideal. It tolerates lower light conditions well. Avoid direct sun which can scorch the soft, fuzzy frond surfaces.

Care at a glance: Water by soaking the root ball or misting the mount thoroughly, then allow to dry slightly before watering again. It absorbs moisture through its fronds as well as its roots. Feed monthly in spring and summer by applying diluted fertilizer directly to the root shield fronds.

Care Instructions

Provide your staghorn fern with plenty of bright, indirect light. A south-facing window is ideal.
Keep the soil lightly moist, but not soggy. Water your fern about once a week, or when the soil feels dry.
Mist your fern often to keep the leaves humid.
Fertilize your staghorn fern once a month with a balanced, liquid fertilizer.
If your fern starts to look wilted or unhealthy, check the roots for signs of rot. If they are affected, repot the fern in fresh potting soil.
