Calathea Rattlesnake is one of the most visually distinctive plants in the Calathea family. Its long, lance-shaped leaves are painted with a pattern of alternating dark and light green spots along the midrib, like scales running down a snake's back. The undersides are a rich, deep purple. And like all Calatheas, the leaves fold gently upward each evening and open again in the morning — one of the most satisfying things to observe in any plant collection.
Good for beginners? It is more manageable than some Calatheas — more forgiving of imperfect conditions than the White Fusion, for example. With bright indirect light and consistent moisture it is very rewarding to grow.
Safe for cats and dogs? Yes. Calathea is non-toxic to pets, making it safe for homes with cats and dogs.
Light needs: Bright to medium indirect light works well. Direct sun will fade and scorch the leaf pattern. The lower the light, the slower the growth.
Care at a glance: Keep soil evenly moist during the growing season. Use filtered water where possible to avoid brown leaf tips from minerals. Benefits from humidity — mist regularly or place on a pebble tray. Feed monthly in spring and summer.

Keep your Calathea in a warm spot with indirect sunlight. It’s best to keep it away from direct sunlight, as too much light can cause its leaves to become scorched.
Water your Calathea regularly, but only when the top soil is dry. If the soil is too wet, it may cause root rot.
Calathea plants like humidity, so it’s best to keep the air around it moist. You can do this by misting it with water or by placing a humidifier near it.
Fertilize your Calathea every month
