Calathea Furry Feather is one of the most tactile and unusual plants in the Calathea family. Its long, wavy-edged leaves are a rich, velvety dark green on top with the defining characteristic that gives this plant its name — the undersides and stems are covered in a soft, fuzzy, burgundy-purple fuzz that feels like velvet to the touch. It is a plant that invites you to reach out and feel it, which makes it as engaging to touch as it is to look at.

Good for beginners? It requires more care than beginner plants but is considered one of the more forgiving Calathea varieties. Consistent moisture and some humidity keep it thriving without excessive fuss.

Safe for cats and dogs? Yes. Calathea is non-toxic to pets, making it safe for homes with cats and dogs.

Light needs: Medium to bright indirect light keeps the leaves most lush and the growth most consistent. It tolerates lower light better than many Calatheas. Avoid direct sun which can scorch the leaf edges.

Care at a glance: Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Use filtered water where possible to prevent brown tips. Benefits from humidity. Feed monthly in spring and summer. Like all Calatheas it folds its leaves upward each evening and opens them in the morning.

Care Instructions

Place your plant in a bright, indirect spot, but avoid direct sunlight as it can harm the leaves.
Water your Calathea once a week, making sure the soil is moist but not soggy.
Keep the temperature in the room between 60-75°F.
If the leaves start to droop, mist the leaves with water to increase humidity around the plant.
Fertilize your plant every other month with a liquid fertilizer.
