The hardest part of buying a plant is not the buying. It is the deciding. You scroll, you compare light needs, you add three to a cart, you take two out, and a week later nothing has been ordered. A plant subscription is built for exactly that problem: the easiest way to decide what plant comes next is to not decide.
But a monthly plant is also a monthly commitment, so it is fair to ask whether it is worth it. Here is what actually arrives, how the schedule works, who it suits, and where it has limits you should know about before you sign up.
What Actually Arrives in a Plant Subscription Box
We run a few subscription types, and the details differ slightly, so we will stick to what the product pages and the subscription FAQ say.
With the Pre-Potted Houseplant Subscription Box, each delivery is one live houseplant, hand-selected from the greenhouse and already potted in a terra cotta planter. Care instructions come with it, and the page describes it as ready to display with no repotting and no extra supplies. If you have ever stood in a hardware aisle holding a bag of potting mix and a plant you were not sure about, you will see the appeal.
The Pet Friendly Subscription Box follows the same monthly rhythm, but every plant is chosen to be non-toxic to cats and dogs, according to the product page. That page describes a 4-inch plant in a nursery pot rather than a terra cotta planter, so the two boxes are not identical. Read both pages and pick the one that matches how you want your plant to arrive.
One thing we will not do is promise you a specific plant. The subscription FAQ explains that the plants are a mix of varieties you can find on the website plus bonus plants for subscribers, and that we try not to repeat the same plant within six months. So think of it as a hand-picked monthly plant, chosen for you, not a menu you order from.
Who a Monthly Plant Is Actually For
We have found that subscriptions work best for three kinds of people.
The decision-fatigued beginner. If the options feel endless, a box removes the pressure. You get one plant at a time, which also means one set of care needs to learn at a time. That is a gentler way to build confidence than bringing home six plants at once. If you are still figuring out your light, our easy care collection is a good place to browse alongside a subscription.
The collector who likes being surprised. If your shelf is already full of the usual suspects, a monthly plant you did not pick yourself can introduce you to something you would have scrolled past.
The pet owner who wants zero guesswork. This is the case for the pet friendly box. Instead of checking toxicity on every new plant, you start from a pool chosen to be safe for cats and dogs. If you want to browse on your own too, the pet friendly plants collection works the same way. We cover how to style a full shelf of cat-safe plants in The Pet-Safe Shelf.
Not sure which plant suits your home?
Before you commit to a monthly plant, take the one minute plant quiz. It matches plants to your light, your space and your pets, which helps you decide whether a subscription fits the home you actually have.

How the Schedule, Billing and Shipping Work
This is the part most subscription pages gloss over, so here is the plain version from our subscription FAQ.
The product pages list monthly, quarterly and annual options. After your first purchase, you are charged on the same day each month, and shipments go out between the 10th and the 15th of the month. The FAQ gives two examples: an order placed on April 21 ships May 10 to 15, while an order placed on April 6 ships April 10 to 15. So the date you sign up decides when your first plant leaves the greenhouse, and it may not be this month. Transit is typically a few days after it ships.
Each box page says the subscription is covered by our 30-Day Plant Guarantee, and our Plant Guarantee page lays out how claims work, so it is worth a read before you subscribe.
You can pause or cancel any time from your account page. Log in, open manage subscriptions, and choose pause or cancel. The product pages describe cancelling as no questions asked, which matters if you are the kind of person who hates being trapped in a recurring charge.
Earn Leaves as you grow your collection
When you shop with us and join the rewards program, you earn Leaves points toward rewards, so every new plant on your shelf can bring you a little closer to your next one.
The Honest Limits Before You Subscribe
A subscription is not for everyone, and we would rather you know the trade-offs up front.
First, the plant size. The subscription FAQ describes a new plant each month in a 4-inch grower pot. These are young, healthy plants that will grow with you, not mature statement pieces. If you want a big plant on day one, you will be happier choosing from our full live plants collection.
Second, the shipping window. Because everything ships between the 10th and the 15th, you cannot pick a precise delivery day. If you will be away at that time, pause before it ships.
Third, location. Subscription boxes cannot be delivered to Hawaii or Alaska.
Fourth, discounts. The FAQ states that promotions and discounts do not apply to subscription purchases, so if you are watching for a sale, you will be buying regular plants rather than a subscription.
Fifth, there is no skipping a single month that we can point you to. The FAQ describes pause and cancel, so if you think you will want a month off now and then, pausing is the tool to use.
Is It Worth It? A Simple Way to Decide
Ask yourself three questions. Do you enjoy picking plants, or do you find it stressful? Do you have room for one new plant every month? And would you like a reason to look forward to a package on your doorstep?
If you answered stressful, yes and yes, a subscription is likely a good fit. If you love hunting for one specific cultivar, you will probably still shop the shelves yourself and treat a subscription as a bonus.
It can also work as a gift. The product pages call the Pre-Potted box giftable, since it arrives ready to enjoy. If you are sending one to someone else, check the shipping address step at checkout to be sure it will go where you want it. For other ideas, browse our perfect plant gifts collection.

If you are still building your first collection, our guide to why plants slow down in autumn explains what to expect from a new arrival this time of year, and Open the Box shows what customers notice when the package arrives.
Plants that give back
We partner with One Tree Planted to give back through tree planting, so the plants you bring home are connected to something growing outdoors too.

Plant Subscription FAQ
Can I choose which plant I get each month?
No. Plants are hand-selected for you from a mix of varieties on the site and bonus plants for subscribers. We try not to repeat the same plant within six months.
How do I pause or cancel?
Log in to your account page, open manage subscriptions, and choose pause or cancel. You can do this at any time.
When will my plant ship?
Subscription shipments go out between the 10th and the 15th of each month. Orders placed early in a month can ship that same month, and later orders ship the following month.
Is the pet friendly box really safe for cats and dogs?
The product page states every plant in that box is non-toxic to cats and dogs. As with any plant, we suggest checking the ASPCA list for the specific plant you receive and keeping an eye on curious pets.
Do you deliver subscriptions everywhere?
Subscription boxes cannot be delivered to Hawaii or Alaska.
